Dashain is a free site for the games that come out at every Nepali gathering. One person hosts a table and shares a six-digit code, and everyone else joins from their own phone, tablet or laptop, in the browser. There is no app to download and no account to make, and voice chat is built in so you can talk while you play. With no one around, play against the computer at Easy, Normal or Hard.
How it works
- Pick a game above, type your name, choose an avatar and tap Host a table. Choose the settings, such as the number of seats and the stakes.
- Send the six-digit code or the invite link to your friends and family. They open it and take a seat.
- Play together on any device. Points and chips are counted for you from round to round, and the last screen shows who owes whom.
The games
Marriage
Also called Marriage rummy, 21-card Marriage and Nepali Marriage.
Twenty-one cards, three decks and a hidden maal. Host a table, share the code and play with friends anywhere.
Carrom
Also called Carrom board and Carom.
The board game of every Nepali courtyard. Play one on one, in doubles or everyone for points, in 2D or 3D.
Ludo
Also called Ludo King, Pachisi and Ludo board game.
The dice game everyone grew up on. Bring your tokens out on a six, capture your friends and race them home, alone or in pairs, in 2D or 3D.
Faras
Also called Teen Patti, 3 Patti, Flush and Flash.
Everyone buys in for the same stack of chips. Play blind or look at your three cards, bet, ask for a sideshow and call the show. Cash out at the end.
Kitti
Also called Kiti, Nine-card game and 9 cards.
Split nine cards into three hands of three and beat the table twice to take the pot. Win all three for a salami; nobody twice, and it's a kitti.
Jhyaap
Also called Dhumbal and Jhyap.
Five cards each: throw singles, sets or runs and pick one back, until your hand is worth ten or less. Call Jhyap and everyone pays you their points, unless someone is lower.
Jut Patti
Also called Jutpatti and Jut Pati.
Draw and throw until every card in your hand has a partner. The card one above the flipped one is a joker and pairs with anything.
Questions
What is Dashain?
Dashain is a free website for playing Nepali card games, carrom and ludo online with friends: Marriage, Faras (Teen Patti), Kitti, Jhyaap (Dhumbal), Jut Patti, Carrom and Ludo. Each game has a rules guide, so new players can learn before they sit down.
Do I need to download an app or make an account?
No. Dashain runs in the browser on phones, tablets and laptops. You type a name, pick an avatar and play. To play full screen, add it to your home screen.
Can I play with family in Nepal from abroad?
Yes. A table works over the internet, so players can join from different cities and countries, and voice chat is built in, so you can talk the way you would across a real table.
Can I play against the computer?
Yes. On any game's page, tap Play vs AI, choose how many opponents and how hard they play (Easy, Normal or Hard), and deal. The game is saved in your browser, so you can close the page and pick it up later. Games against the computer are just for practice and fun: there are no stakes and no voice chat.
Do you play for real money?
No. Dashain never takes or pays out money. It keeps the points and chips for you, and if your group plays for stakes the host can set a value per point or chip, so the last screen shows who owes whom. Settling up is between you.
Why is it called Dashain?
Dashain is Nepal's biggest festival, and its long holidays are when families gather, bring out the cards and set up the carrom board. The site is named after those days.
